THE REGENCY OF NABIRE

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Nabire is a part of Papua Province that is located in the eastern seawaters of Indonesia. Occupying total area of 15,530 sq km, the regency borders on Sarera Bay in the north, on Waropen and Paniai Regency in the east, on Mimika and Kaimana Regency in the south and ono Wondama Regency in the west. Nabire Regency which is located in the northern area of Papua Regency has a very strategic position for traffic of trading and interisland inter-regency transportation in Papua area, either sea transportation, land transportation, as well as air transportation. Nabire Regency is the entrance gate for the mobility of trading and development of Puncak Jaya and Paniai Regency today and in the future.


INVESTMENT POTENTIAL AND OPPORTUNITIES

Nabire Regency belongs to agropolitan development area which is very potential in Cendrawasih Bay area. Development of agribusiness is Suported by the availability of vast and fertile land area as well as suitability of agro climate. Its topographic condition, which is different between coastal area, lowland area and mountainous area, has enabled various agribusiness commodities to grow. The development of agribusiness is also supported by availability of infrastructure and facilities. The available technical irrigation infrastructure in a number of locations can be developed to support agriculture production. The location of Nabire which strategic, added with the availability of representative road, will also smoothen marketing process of products. Beside agribusiness sector, Nabire Regency is also very potential for development of marine and fishery sector, mining sector, tourism sector, industrial sector and housing/property sector.


Food Crops and Horticulture

Nabire Regency has potential land of about 810,427 Ha for development of agriculture in broader sense. Of the total area, about 11,918 Ha of which can be utilitized for development of food crops. However, up until at present, such land potential have not been fully utilitized. On the other hand, efforts to incease production of food crops and horticulture are continually made and encouraged to increase farmer’s income and fulfill appropriate intake of nutrient of the people. As the production of food crops and horticulture commodities increases, it will, expectedly, provide appropriate food for people of Nabire specially and people in other region in general.


Marine and Fishery Sector

Marine and Fishery potential of Nabire Regency is characterized by the availability of vast coastal and seawater areas, bays, island, estuaries, coral reefs, mangrove forest, and sea grass. Nabire Regency has abundant high-density fishery resourches. In the mainland, there are rivers that flow throughout the year, and vast land for development of fresh water fish farming. Those available potential have not been optimally utilitized. Fish, as the main source of living of fisermen, are still in high stock naturally. Production potential of marine fishery reaches 72,331 ton, of which only as big as 0.67 % has been utilitized. Important and potential economic fishes are especially pelagic fishes which are scattered throughout seawater area of Nabire Regency, while distribution of demersal fisher is concentrated in seawater area of Yaur, Napan and Teluk Umar sub Districs.


Mining

Nabire Regency has mining mineral potential which are scattered in number of locations. Gold is found in almost all of sub districts with total indicated distribution of deposit reach 30 sq km ( in uwapa ) and 566,500 ha (in Yaur). Marble is found in Nabire sub district (total 150 milion ton), and Yaur sub district (total deposit 163 million ton). Other mineral existed in the regency include fossil oil, kaolin, nickel, limestone, quartz sand, iron sand, cooper, zinc, granite and coal in Makimi sub district (total deposit 49,500,000 ton). In addition, there also a number of big rivers (Siriwo, Puarani, Cemara, Otowa, and Wanggar rivers), which are potential for development of hydro electricity generating plant that is predicted to produce electricity of 50,591 MW.


Tourism

Potential tourism area in Nabire Regency comprises marine tourism area that is found in Cendrawasih National Park area of 1.453.500 Ha. One third of the area included into Nabire Regency that consists of tourism park of Nuburi, Pepaya, Angrameos, Nataburi, Kumbur, and Tanjung Manguar island. Investment opportunities to manage tourism area are directed to the development of beach tourism in Yaur, Wanggar, Nabire, and Napan sub Districts and island tourism in Napan sub district (Moor Mambor island).
